Case summary: On June 10th, 2022, a complainant reported to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) that a bank swallow colony was being threatened by excavation work in a sand pit in Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, Quebec. On June 16th, ECCC Wildlife Enforcement Officers attended the site and observed a heavy-duty front-end loader removing sand near the nests in question, causing the sand wall to collapse, destroying the bank swallow nests. The Officers conducted interviews with the owner of the sand pit and the operators of the heavy machinery, who confirmed that the work had been carried out under the owner’s orders since May 2022 and that approximately 20 nests were located at the site of the collapse.
