Avjet Holding Inc. specializes in the distribution of aviation fuels and owns petroleum product storage systems at various airports, including the one at Natashquan airport at the time of the events in question.
On January 18, 2023, at 11:07 p.m., Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) was notified of a release of jet fuel into the environment. Following an off-site inspection, an ECCC enforcement officer found that from January 17, 2023 to January 18, 2023, Avjet Holding Inc. had released an estimated 4933 litres of JET-A (AIA) into the environment from a petroleum product storage tank system regulated under the Storage Tank Systems for Petroleum Products and Allied Petroleum Products Regulations (STSPPAPPR).
Environment and Climate Change Canada’s enforcement officers then launched an investigation which proved that, during fuel delivery, some 4,900 litres of the product had been released into the environment. Two valves left open by an Avjet Holding Inc. employee and another faulty valve in the storage system’s filling cabinet were responsible for the release.
It is a violation of the Storage Tank Systems for Petroleum Products and Allied Petroleum Products Regulations under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 to release a petroleum product into the environment through a tank leak or spill.
